Operation Smile is an international medical charity that has provided hundreds of thousands of free surgeries for children and young adults in developing countries who are born with cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial deformities. As a partner since 1999, we have provided product donations and financial contributions because we share the belief that every child deserves access to safe, effective and timely surgical care and a future filled with hope. But the partnership goes well beyond donations.
Our partnership has done incredible things to advance healthcare through medical education. The educational programming we support has directly influenced the development of compassionate, skilled plastic surgeons throughout the world through medical mission experience. Additionally, the surgeons training program is locally focused and provides comprehensive training of new plastic surgeons through one-on-one mentorship. This program will provide several hands-on training opportunities and, as a result, foster the creation of new cleft surgeons in resource-poor countries and increase the overall surgical capacities of countries around the world.
Additionally, we sponsor groups of employees as non-medical mission volunteers who provide day-to-day support for families during this critical time. For the most recent trip in January 2017, eight employees traveled to Panskura, India. In support of this mission, we conducted a fundraiser, through which the company matched employee donations dollar for dollar. The campaign raised funding for almost 300 surgeries.
Employees along with Chairman & CEO, Kevin Lobo landscaped and cleaned the interior of a local shelter. They also provided toys for the play area and new computers to replace the lone, ailing unit used for homework and job searches.
In partnership with the Red Cross employees engaged local businesses to solicit donations.
Employees came together to organize an ice skating event for special needs children. The children were able to enjoy 3 hours of ice skating coaching, games and lunch.
Employees hosted 180 students and their teachers at the Arroyo Convention Center as part of Regalo de Amor. At the convention center, students and teachers were served snacks while enjoying musical and karaoke performances, and clown and magic shows.

Building a sustainable workforce
We encourage, value and leverage the differences in people and perspectives to make healthcare better. Employee engagement is extremely important to us. By listening to our employees through feedback given in annual workplace surveys we hear directly from them what they feel is important and continually improve our culture. In 2018, 97% of our employees shared their thoughts about our workplace culture. The near universal participation of our employees reflects our organization’s strong commitment to engagement. Additionally, we scored in the 89th percentile for the question, “At work, my opinions count,” which we identify as one of the key drivers of employee engagement.
We also know that fostering best-practices in manager-team relationships builds employee trust. We offer a variety of tools and trainings to equip our managers to drive business outcomes and employee engagement. We host a series called the Engagement Learning Series designed to provide education on a variety of engagement-related topics and keep a focus on engagement throughout the year. Sessions cover the foundations for accelerating engagement, how to use action planning and tying engagement to business outcomes. The sessions are open to all employees, and we record and post them on our intranet community. More than 3,248 managers participated in 2018.
Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) act as strategic partners to the business by promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion. Our ERGs include: Stryker Women’s Network (SWN), Stryker’s Allies for Equality (SAFE), Women in Stryker’s Engineering (WISE), Stryker’s African American Network (SAAN), Hispanic/Latino network (SOMOS), Stryker’s Emerging Professionals (SEP) and Stryker’s Veterans Association (SVA).
At Stryker, Diversity and Inclusion is an imperative supported and driven by leadership. In 2019 our Chairman and CEO, Kevin Lobo, signed the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion?, the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion within the workplace. Stryker’s ongoing effort to eliminate the use of Tin, Tantalum, Tungsten and Gold (“3TG”) from sources that may finance armed conflict and promote human rights abuses in The Democratic Republic of the Congo and adjoining countries including: Angola; Burundi; Central African Republic; The Republic of the Congo; Rwanda; South Sudan; Tanzania; Uganda; and Zambia (“Conflict Region”).
Stryker supports responsible sourcing from the Conflict Region and expects its suppliers to procure material containing 3TG from socially responsible sources. The goal is to eliminate funding to human rights abusers while continuing to support socially responsible commerce in the Conflict Region.
